Through the unbelievable generosity of my friends in the wine industry, I set out to make what I believe, to be my best red - naturally fermented with stems, and punched down with my hands

I went in search of spice, texture and mouthfeel without a heavy palate weight. I can proudly say that this wine has given me the best satisfaction of all my vintages since 1977.

The Family Syrah by Kevin Arnold 2023 Stellenbosch (14%) Ex-Waterford supremo Kevin Arnold was one of the pioneers of Syrah in South Africa, so it's no surprise that the first release of The Family Red is so impressive. Combining grapes from three Stellenbosch sources - Langverwacht, Middelvlei and Reyneke - it has some subtle clove and tobacco leaf notes from 15% whole bunches and a palate of pepper, blackberry and red cherry framed by savoury tannins. 2025-33.
